Hey beautiful people!

I don’t know if you remember, but I wrote a blog post a few weeks ago about how to customize your resume with real-life examples from Selena Gomez.

I had so much fun writing that blog that I ended up writing up two different versions of how Selena Gomez’s resume could look like — one for her film career and one for her music career.

Well, I decided to expand on that today and write about what I learned when I tried writing out Selena Gomez’s resume for her music career.

LESSON #1: CONSIDER ADDING A RESUME SUMMARY

While resume summaries are optional, you can consider adding a resume summary at the top of your resume if you

1) have common themes throughout your resume or
2) have substantial achievements that can really help you stand out

If you don’t think these things apply to you, then you can skip this step. Either way, I’ll show you how I went about writing this resume summary for Selena Gomez.

I found this paragraph on Selena Gomez’s Wikipedia page that made it really easy for me to turn into a resume summary. Then I included a little more information about Selena Gomez’s achievements that really don’t really need much explanation.

LESSON #2: FIND CREATIVE WAYS TO PACK IN INFORMATION

You have limited space on your resume so always be creative in packing in as much information as you can into each bullet point without compromising clarity and conciseness.

For example, here are two separate bits of information that I gathered from Selena Gomez’s Wikipedia page.

Instead of writing them out as two separate bullet points, I figured out a way to splice both of them together onto one line.

This technique is really useful if you have a lot more to share than you can fit on your resume.

But if don’t have quite as much experience then you can leave them as separate bullet points to make your resume look fuller.

LESSON #3: EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Another important thing to keep in mind when you write your resume is that you should always provide context to why your responsibilities and achievements are significant.

The reason for this is that anyone can be assigned responsibilities in an internship or job but those responsibilities on their own don’t necessarily speak to the skills and experience you have as a person.

Instead, you should spend some time thinking about why were you given these responsibilities in the first place? What qualifications or experiences do you have that made you the perfect person to take on these responsibilities?

Even better if you can also explain the tangible results or impact that you helped bring about.

Examples:

RESPONSIBILITY: Tasked with managing a team of 10 people
SIGNIFICANCE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Tasked with managing a diverse, global team from China, Morocco, and the UK.
SIGNIFICANCE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Spearheaded the social media campaigns targeting the Chinese, Moroccan, and British market
RESPONSIBILITY + ACHIEVEMENT: Spreadheaded global social media campaign leading to a 20% increase in student sign-ups

Here you have it! Thank you for sticking with me through to the end of this blog post.

Make sure you send me any questions or comments that you may have. And also let me know if there’s another celebrity or topic that you’ll like me to write about.

Now until next time, remember to go and star in your own story!
